Computers and Homeland Security Unite Homeland security was created by the Bush administration in 2001 as a result of the September 11th events. It is an independent agency in the United States whose mission is to protect the nation from potential terrorist attacks. Together the agency is made up of twenty two agencies and 180,000 employees. Their main focus is â€Å"intelligence and warning; boarder and transportation security; domestic counterterrorism; protecting critical infrastructure; defending against catastrophic threats; and emergency preparedness and response† (Whitehouse 1). Two hours up the narrow, winding, gravel path spiraling the mountain, we veer to the right at Big Oak Campsite. The popping of the tire treads on the gravel sends warm waves through my body; I know we have arrived. Immediately I venture to the freshwater stream crafted from the melting ice off the higher altitude mountains. Due to how inviting it looks, I hop across the slippery stones to the infamous â€Å"Old Faithful† rock, which is just a good trout fishing spot. Standing here I scan my surroundings, which blow my mind. The lush forest filled with oak, pine, maple, and evergreen trees is so dominant over me; and I know it, but I am ok with it. The stream is relatively narrow, only spanning about 20 ft in width. Rocks of all sizes poke out the surface of the water and electric green moss grows thick on each one. They serve as my stepping stones back to the bank. The Coleman camper we pull behind the car is old and smells musty every year, but it doesn’t phase me at all. We wench the pop top up and pull out the beds, make them up and sweep the linoleum floor before we go any further in setting up camp, the last touch to the camper being a floor mat just inside the door. By this time, the sun is setting and the fireflies are flourishing. Everywhere you look you see a spark of yellow-green light on the move. It’s almost impossible to refrain from getting up to attempt to catch one, so I get up every time. Creeping up slowly with a jar in one hand, lid in the other, I zoom my vision to the vicinity around me, wait for the bud of the insect to light up, and snatch him up inside the jar. It is likely, too, that I move on to the next nearest light I see and try again to catch a critter, and in the process lose the first one I caught, leaving me with none. The creaking of the Coleman coolers filled with ice, cold cokes, sweet tea, bacon, eggs, and the most delicious chocolate milk in the World makes my eyes light up. It just gives me that feeling of lightness; like there are no worries here. It has nothing to do with the fact that it is a cooler, but more so the amount of times I have heard the sound, only here. As the temperature drops low at night, a fire is needed to keep warm. Mom usually takes the initiative to get the fire going. The teepee of logs under stuffed with newspapers and twigs burns slow and hot, and makes a mean s’more. Appetite satisfied, exhausted from the trip, the pull out mattress looks ever so inviting. I grab my toothbrush and walk to the water cooler to brush my teeth and wash my face. After cleaned up, it’s PJ time. Then I lay myself down, pull the covers up to my chin and tuck myself in. As I lie here, I can honestly say I feel numb to the World. The rushing of the stream plays in my head like music and puts me in a trance; a trance that no other place could ever measure up to doing. Arrowsmith by Sinclair Lewis Essay In the novel Arrowsmith, by Sinclair Lewis, written in 1925, one can read of our worlds lack of idealism in science, most often found in the medical profession (Encarta, 1). This book portrays the times in terms of scientific advancement not being idealistic, mostly in the medical field. Our scientists could not come up with their own ideas and our progress was going nowhere, fast. Although, today we are advancing so rapidly that we have no choice but to move and experiment, there is no time to slow down and copy old works. Sinclair Lewis also combines his life and the life of a graduating microbiologists, who he interviewed to help him write this book, into his main character, Dr. Martin Arrowsmith. All of this goes into the book Arrowsmith. Sinclair lewis was born on the seventh of Febuary, 1885, in the town of Sauk Centre, Minnesota, to his warmhearted parents, Emma Kermont Lewis and Dr. Edwin J. Lewis. At a very young age Sinclair read widely in grade school and continued on in his studies for many years (Grebstien, 16). Lewis studied at Yale University form 1903 till 1906. There he studied literary writings and works to help him become a writer. His father had disagreed with his career choice, but he went on and did what he wanted to do most, write. At one time he was so disgusted with his father that he ran away and tried to join the Spanish-American War as a drummer boy (Cobletz, 248). He did not get far; his father caught him before he left town. Back to collage he went and even through collage Lewis still read many books. One professor was quoted as saying â€Å"He was drawing more books from the Yale library than, I believe, any undergraduates before or since. Lewis was known to read such books from authors Hardy, Meredith, James, Howells, Austen, Bronte, Tolstoy, Pushkin, Turgenev, Gogol, Flaubert, Zola, Huneker, Pinero, Jones, Shaw, d’Annunzio, Sudermann, Yeats, George Moore, Nietzsche, Haeckel, Huxley, Moody, Marx, Gorky, Blake, Pater, Shelley, Keats, Coleridge, Rossetti, Swinburne, Clough, and Ibsen. All of these authors were influential to him, but none more than the famous H. G. Wells (Grebstein 24). He accomplished all this during college while keeping two or more jobs at one time and writing for several papers along with his own books that he wrote. In October of 1906 he left school for a few months and stayed with his brother in his utopian colony in New Jersey. A few months later he remembered the work ethics his father taught him and went back to school and got his degree in 1907. After that he traveled around the world looking for jobs. He worked at such places as the Panama Canal, New York Post newspaper, he worked as a editor for many other papers, he sold some of his story ideas to Jack London, and of course he still wrote free lance (Light, 196). Finally he published his first work in 1912, Hike and the Aeroplane, under his pseudonym â€Å"Tom Graham†. Many books followed. He published a total of twenty two works written along with a few playwrights and movie scripts. He was also married, and divorced to Grace Livingstone Hegger with whom he had a son Wells Lewis, and he also married Dorothy Thompson, who he also divorced, and had another son, Michael Lewis. During his career he had done many of things but none more unpredictable than when he declined the Pulitzer Prize for his book entiled Arrowsmith. It seemed that he still had grievances with the committee for declined the award to his previous book, Main Street. That is fine, they are entitled to there own feelings and views, but I tend to think of him as a great writer after I read two of his books, Arrowsmith, and Main Street. In Arrowsmith Lewis focuses on two major devices, or themes. One was the theme seen throughout all his books, the lack of values in middle-class America, specifically spiritual and intellectual values combined with monotony and emotional frustration. This is just saying that we as a people have regressed and become lesser of a what we were before. Lewis seemed to think our society was changing for the worst. Second was his views on our lack of scientific idealism in the medical profession. This is saying that our advance in science, especially the medical field, has been slow and uneventful. He seems to think that we had been a step behind from everyone else and copying others ideas to help advance more quickly. We could not come up with ideas of our own. The book is based upon the life and advances of a medical scientist, Dr. Martin Arrowsmith. Lewis explains how, during the course of his life, Dr. Arrowsmith portrays these two major themes. Dr. Arrowsmith would work his hardest and still always find himself trailing behind others. In the process of trying to catch up to everyone else he also finds his middle-class American profile turn back towards the right direction of progression and back to the good old-fashioned values of life so many people had forgotten or done away with. Things became much easier for Dr. Martin Arrowsmith after he got back on track, so to say. Lewis ended the book with Dr. Martin Arrowsmith saying â€Å"We’ll plug along doing our best and if not, we fail† (Lewis, 464). Hopefully we all will succeed. In the early nineteen hundreds many people had lost their traditional values and fallen behind in society because we were moving so fast and it was much easier than trying to keep up with everything. Today it is the same way, society is changing so rapidly now that if you stop for one minute everyone else passes you by and you have to work to catch back up. The book Arrowsmith is saying that when society changes we can’t break down and fall apart we must stay together and move on gaining speed as we move along and if we stumble we have to get right back up and keep moving. This book is very much a part of the times in which it was written and it also relates to today’s society. Always moving, always advancing, trying to keep up. All of this makes Lewis’ writings unique, the novel itself was interesting and fun to read. It teaches you about the nineteen twenties and of Sinclair Lewis himself. It is not very often that a book of this magnitude comes out and becomes published. This book, Arrowsmith, was a Pulitzer Prize winner that was declined out of dislike. Sinclair Lewis is a great writer who knew the times and portrayed them well. He lived a full and rich life, one of which he should be proud of. His works were all best sellers and he helped shape and mold society with his impact of his new writing.

Ram Mohan Roy was born on May 22, 1772 in Radhanagar, a village in Hoogly district of West Bengal. That was a time when the Muslim rule was on the decline, law and order was at the lowest ebb, social values and religious institutions were shaken sand economy was in chaos. It was a time when an all-round reconstruction and renovation was necessary for the continued existence of social life and order. Ram Mohan received his elementary education in the village school as was the practice in those days. He acquired knowledge of his mother tongue, Bengali which he perfected through self-study. His father sent him to Patna to learn Persian and Arabic. This proved a boon, as Ram Mohan could study the Sufi writers and glean gems from them to be tallied with the Vedantic philosophy. Thus, his mental field was broadened. It brought him out of the narrow confines of religious views. Three maxims that Roy loved to repeat were from the Sufi thoughts. These were Man is the slave of benefits, The enjoyment of the worlds rests on these two points-kindness to friends and civility to enemies and the third one, The way of serving God is to do good to man. One of the most endearing traits of Ram Mohan Roys personality was his tolerant attitude to all religions. He had studied Hinduism, Islam, Christianity and Judaism. During his pilgrimage to Tibet, he got acquainted with Buddhism and from the Marwaris at Rangpur, he learnt the precepts of Jainism. The year 1815 turned to be a decisive year in the life of Ram Mohan Roy. He formed the Atmiya Sabha, the inner circle, to discuss theological subjects and also to translate the Upanishads. The Atmiya Sabha met once a week. The discussions soon led to the establishment of the Brahmo Samaj to secure freedom from the bondage of ignorance and superstitions. Roy started his crusade against Sati after a heart-rending experience that shook him to the roots. In 1811, on the death of his brother, Jag Mohan, his wife was forced to commit Sati. Ram Mohan was filled with unbearable pity, rage and remorse. He determined to end the abominable practice. Roy raised his voice against Sati and after several attempts succeeded in drawing the governments attention. The orthodox society turned anti-Roy but with dogged determination he persisted. In December 1828, the famous regulation was passed which declared the practice illegal and punishable as a criminal offence. Once Sati was abolished, womens lot drew Ram Mohans attention. It was a time when women had no voice. They were considered inferior, unworthy of trust and devoid of knowledge. He wrote extensively on womens rights and once again incurred the wrath of the orthodox society. His plea for the rights of females shows that he was a strong supporter of womens uplift. He fought for their legal rights to property; he took up the cause of the destitute women; he raised his voice against the sale of daughters to prospective husbands due to pecuniary interests and he condemned the system of polygamy. In 1830, he sailed for England along with his adopted son. Raja Ram, then a boy of 12, and two servants. He visited Manchester, Bentham and Liverpool besides London. The main objective of his visit to England was to press for certain important reforms for India. After his stay in London, he went to Bristol where he died on September 27, 1833, after a brief illness. His passing away was deeply mourned by his admirers. He believed in the divine unity of mankind because he was deeply religious and had faith in the divinity of man, irrespective of caste or creed.
