Computers and Homeland Security Unite Homeland security was created by the Bush administration in 2001 as a result of the September 11th events. It is an independent agency in the United States whose mission is to protect the nation from potential terrorist attacks. Together the agency is made up of twenty two agencies and 180,000 employees. Their main focus is â€Å"intelligence and warning; boarder and transportation security; domestic counterterrorism; protecting critical infrastructure; defending against catastrophic threats; and emergency preparedness and response† (Whitehouse 1). The agency could not carry out these important tasks if it were not for the latest in computer technology. â€Å"The Department of Homeland Security is†¦show more content†¦Homeland security has also created another network called â€Å"The Terrorist Screening Center (TSC)† (Whitehouse 1). The TSC is a collection of â€Å"terrorist watch lists† (Whitehouse 1) that allows the government to keep a close watch on potential terrorist that might be harmful to the United States and living here on US soil. The agency has become technologically advanced with protecting the US boarders from terrorists who maybe importing harmful goods into the country. They use portable radiation detectors to ensure that harmful unwanted radiological materials are not being smuggled into the United States. Along with the land in the United States the waters are also important to protect. The United States coast guard as now adopted TeleType’s GPS wireless world navigation system is a handheld computer â€Å"that combines land, air, and water navigation† (TeleType 1). With this new innovated technology the coast guard believes that it will be very beneficial because the crew will be familiarized with the terrain allowing them to prepare for the conditions in advance. As a result it will decrease the amount of accidents and planes that are lost because they disappear from flight control’s radar system. The handhelds are also valuable because they can store pictures of important landmarks and monuments that are crucial in location.
